'Team D' |
‘Team D’ Continues to Make Headlines. Last year, ‘Team Diarrhea’, or Team D — the Minnesota Department of Health's highly effective food-borne illness investigation unit — discovered that jalapenos were the cause of a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul. (view story)
This year, Team D was the first to identify Peanut Corporation of America as the producer of salmonella-tainted peanut butter that recently sickened more than 677 nationwide.
Currently three EnHS students, Carrie Klumb, Evan Henke, and Julie Hoffer, are among the eight SPH graduate students that make up the interviewing core of Team D. They are led by MDH epidemiologist (and EnHS alumnus) Carlota Medus.
James Phillips, head of infectious diseases for the Arkansas Department of Health, told USA Today that, "Minnesota is leap years ahead of ... most of the rest of the nation," when it comes to food-borne illness investigation.
